Google Cloud to counter crypto-mining malware attacks with latest offering

Google Cloud, a cloud computing service offered by Google, announced Monday a new product offering that allows its customers to detect crypto-mining malware and other threats on their imperiled accounts.

According to the November estimates by Google Cloud, over 86% of the 50 recently compromised accounts were used to perform crypto-mining activities. At the time, the company offered several recommendations to counter the malware threats.

However, given the magnitude of the problem, Google Cloud has offered a complete separate solution to detect crypto-mining malware attacks. Called the ‘Virtual Machine Threat Detection (VMTD)’, the new offering is part of Google Cloud’s Security Command Center Premium.

The latest product would not require users to run additional software on their computer, a feature that comes with several benefits. Elaborating on that, the company’s blog post read:

“Not running an agent inside of their instance means less performance impact, lowered operational burden for agent deployment and management, and exposing less attack surface to potential adversaries.”

Instead of using an agent, Google Cloud implemented the hypervisor, an underlying VM orchestration software, that includes “nearly universal and hard-to-tamper-with threat detection.”
