— Instagram (@instagram) May 10, 2022Instagram has kickstarted NFT support for crypto art from several major blockchain networks with the announcement of a pilot.
Instagram head, Adam Mosseri, said in that a small group of U.S. users will initially have the ability to display NFTs on their feed, stories, and in messages. NFT details are displayed in a similar way to tagged profiles and products and are named ‘digital collectibles.’ Clicking on the tag will display details like the name of the creator and owner.
NFTs minted on the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains will be supported initially, with Solana and Flow coming soon.
Moreover, Meta (Facebook) CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a video post that Facebook would also be implementing the service hinting that this was also part of the company’s metaverse play.
“This week we’re starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so creators and collectors can display their NFTs on their profile.
Similar functionality is coming to Facebook soon, along with augmented reality NFTs on Instagram Stories via Spark AR so you can place digital art into physical spaces.”
– CEO, Meta
In a news release, Instagram added that they will be exploring additional features to provide further benefits of this technology to creators and collectors over the coming months.
