Cryptomonkeys has been one of the projects I have enjoyed participating the most in the past months. For those that don't know, Cryptomonkeys are freely distributed NFTs on the WAX Blockchain and part of the wider Banano family/ecosystem.
When I say freely distributed, I really mean it. No, you don't pay to mint Cryptomonkeys and there are a number of different ways to get some into your hands or should I say in your wallets. My favorite way so far has been through playing different Blockchain games and getting Cryptomonkeys NFTs in addition to the game's native token / NFT rewards.
Blockchain games are a fun way to play different games and earn crypto or NFTs. We all have our favorite ones based on our taste. I know people who actively play more than 5 different games per day. Some of them require a lot of time and effort, while others are simple one click grind games where you need to login and perform tasks every few hours.
There are currently 4 major blockchain games you can play right now, and in addition to whatever you earn in terms of game NFTs & tokens you will also get free Cryptomonkeys NFTs.
AlienWorlds
AlienWorlds is the first and arguably the most famous. For the better part of the last two years, AlienWorlds a space exploration Metaverse game has been the most played Web3 game. Picking up AlienWorlds is free. You'll get a basic shovel and you can mine for Trillium (TLM) in one of the planets of your choice. Trillium, the in-game token can later be used for AlienWorld missions or exchanged for WAX. To add to that, if you mine in one of the Cryptomonkeys owned lands in the different AlienWorld planets you'll also get Cryptomonkeys NFTs either through hitting the mining target or the hourly raffle.

Train of the Century
Train of the Century () is another web3 game built on the WAX Blockchain that you can play and earn Cryptomonkeys. As the name suggests, it is a Blockchain based train simulator game . Although, you'll need some resources, railcars, and train conductor NFTs to start playing ToC, Cryptomonkeys offer some starting NFTs to onboard new players that have never tried the game before. While sending your train to the Cryptomonkeys owned train stations you'll get Cryptomonkeys NFTs in addition to the game's token Tocium.

Taco Brigade
Taco Brigade is one of the games in the wider ecosystem on WAX. It is a free to start game where you won't need to buy any equipment and NFTs. Once logged into the Taco Brigade interface you need to choose a venue where you'll work. Venues are owned by other players. Without any equipment you can click once every three hours the work button and get some SHING tokens as a reward. Furthermore, from time to time Taco rewards the holders of their NFTs and players of their game with Taco tokens, NFT packs or other perks. Last week, I got a free Taco NFT pack while playing Taco Brigade.
If you want to qualify for free Cryptomonkeys NFTs while playing Taco Brigade you need to pick "Los Bananos Hermanos" as your venue. That venue is owned by Cryptomonkeys and those who opt to work there qualify for the free Cryptomonkeys NFT raffles held every two hours.

is another web3 game that rewards you with Cryptomonkeys. Upload is a real estate simulator where you can own, buy, trade and sell properties all over the world. Furthermore, the game also has a mobile app making it easy to play it from your phones. If you visit the Cryptomonkeys owned properties in Upland you can get free NFTs. To play Upland you'll need an wallet, while you will receive your NFTs in your WAX wallet. To be eligible for Cryptomonkeys rewards while playing these games you'll need
- A WAX wallet (there are a number of them like Wax Cloud Wallet
- Join the Cryptomonkeys
- Have your WAX wallet linked through Monkeyconnect
- Fill the relevant game registration forms or game criteria as delineated in the above links.
Concluding thoughts
Since I joined the community of Cryptomonkeys I've got more than 100 CM NFTs for free. Furthermore, apart from being collector's items I have been able to use these NFTs in other games like MonkeySlots, Monkeymatching, Dungeon Master, and Art Exhibition. Holding Cryptomonkeys NFTs into my wallet has also made me eligible for the drop of their new cards once they are released.
Playing games is just one of the ways you can get free NFTs while engaging with the Cryptomonkeys community. There are a number of other ways that you can get free tokens and NFTs through Cryptomonkeys initiatives that I will present in a follow up article.
