An Introduction to Play-to-Earn Crypto Apps

I'm excited to be kicking off my first round of articles on PUBLISH0X with a blog series reviewing play-to-earn (P2E) crypto games and other smartphone apps. I started evaluating these types of apps for purely personal reasons - I consider myself to be "crypto-curious" currently. While I'm fascinated by the technology and the potential of cryptocurrencies, I'm still a bit reluctant to invest any considerable fiat just quite yet. However, my time is my own, and playing some of the play-to-earn crypto games available seemed like a good way to dip my toes in the water.

Over the next few weeks I'll be publishing my reviews of a variety of free play-to-earn games and apps that offer payouts in crypto, but before I dive in, I wanted to give an overview of some of the things I'll be evaluating, and other aspects to consider before investing a lot of your time into these apps.

Earning Potential vs. Time Commitment

  • The most important thing to remember: don't quit your day job. Even the best the best apps out there (so far) are paying below a livable wage, so keep your earning expectations reasonable.
  • A common criticism: for the amount of time invested, you'd be better off working an extra hour at your 'real life job' and just investing the extra income in crypto and be done with it. At the end of the day, this is true the vast majority of the time. But if you're like me and attempting to avoid making any fiat purchases, play-to-earn apps may be of interest to you. (They may turn out to be more fun than your day job, too, but that's for you to decide!)
  • Another common criticism: many P2E apps include offer walls that consist of get-paid-to (GPT) offers and surveys that pay better from the original site than through the apps. This is also frequently true - you may again come out ahead by signing up for legitimate survey sites and then investing your fiat pay-outs into crypto rather than accessing them through the offer walls in crypto games. For that reason you'll want to evaluate the payout offered and the time commitment needed to complete any GPT and survey options in-app to see if they are indeed worth your time and effort. (I have considerable experience with legitimate online survey companies having used them as supplemental income during the last recession. The best payout you can reasonably expect from surveys in my experience is roughly $7 per/hour - so again, don't quit your day job! But if you keep this figure in mind and calculate some simple math when evaluating survey offers, you can quickly decide if attempting a survey for any app or site is worth the eventual crypto rewards. I'll be referencing this rough hourly rate when going over the various offers in-app.

Reviews: Payouts, Functionality, and Entertainment Value

As I run through each play-to-earn crypto game review, I'll be evaluating each app based on proof of payment & payment amount, functionality of the app, and - when you get right down to it - is the game fun to play? If you're going to be investing your time in a P2E app, I at least hope you'll find it engaging enough to be worth it!

Reader Suggestions and Feedback

I'm sure there are many more mobile games and other smartphone apps paying out in crypto that I haven't found yet. So please be sure to leave your recommendations in the comments (don't forget to include your referral links and codes so that you can get rewards from my install!) to let me know which apps you're enjoying the most!
