About ZEN?

ZEN is the currency of Horizen.

It is the ?rst cryptocurrency with fully end-to-end encryption to protect internode communications. Its optional privacy feature allows you to control your digital footprint.

ZEN offers two different types of addresses:

  • T-Addresses - Regular addresses for making transactions similar to bitcoin. These transactions are public and transparent on the blockchain.
  • Z-Addresses - Also known as shielded addresses, transactions between Z-Addresses are completely private and anonymous. They leverage zero knowledge cryptography to obscure sender and recipient addresses, as well as amount sent.

Balances in shielded addresses are private, however, any regular addresses on the receiving end will deshield the token and reveal the value received on the blockchain.

Zennodes

Horizen has the largest node networks in the industry with a multi-tiered node system.

A robust Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network is the foundation for building any type of advanced blockchain application. Horizen’s massive and geographically dispersed node network improves the scalability, reliability, security and speed of the network.

Horizen’s node infrastructure supports the public main blockchain as well as a large number of sidechains.

Each node is rewarded for supporting the network. All Horizen Node Operators receive 10% of the block reward.

Horizen has three types of nodes:

Regular Full Nodes

All public blockchains require full nodes.

Full nodes:

  • Are typically wallets running an instance of Horizen's core software.
  • Hold a fully up-to-date copy of the blockchain.
  • Are contactable via IP address with the correct port open (default: 9033)
37073 Secure Nodes

Secure Nodes are full nodes with TLS encryption enabled to secure inter-node communication which prevents things like man-in-the-middle attacks.

Horizen is the first blockchain to implement node-to-node TLS encryption.

Secure Node Operators each receive an equal share of 10% of the block rewards.

3996 Super Nodes

Super Nodes are currently more powerful Secure Nodes. In the future, they will host Horizen sidechains which will allow the tracking of Secure Nodes to be brought on-chain, an important step forward towards decentralization. They will also support many dApps that provide real-life services.

Super Node Operators each receive an equal share of 10% of the block rewards.

Wallet

A wallet is an app for generating, managing, and storing cryptographic keys - your public and private key. You can check your balance, receive, and send funds with a wallet.

  • Shepere by Horizen (dekstop)
  • Myzenwallet (mobile)
  • Coinomi (mobile and dekstop)
  • Paytomat (mobile)
  • Mycelium (mobile)

There are many ways to store your cryptocurrencies. Usually, there is a trade-off between convenience and security. The most important question is: where are the keys? A wallet is only a piece of software, an interface, that helps you perform the basic functions of cryptocurrencies: view your balance, create an address to receive funds, and create transactions to send funds.

With a hosted online wallet you are trusting a third party to handle your keys. You have the option to recover your password if misplaced, but there is always a significant third-party risk. If you don’t control your keys, you don’t control your funds!

With desktop, mobile, paper or hardware wallets you own the keys and nobody but yourself is responsible for keeping them safe. If your device breaks you have a mnemonic/recovery phrase to recover access to your money. The menmonic phrase is as sensible as your private key itself and if it gets in the wrong hands, your money can be stolen. This is should not scare you, but make you cautious.
