The CryptoCares campaign on IndieGoGo seeks to create a decentralized fundraising platform that's not just for raising capital for new startups, but instead focuses on the individual's needs. Functioning similarly to GoFundMe, it would allow the fundraisers to raise money in their chosen cryptocurrency of an unspecified range of choices, rather than in FIAT. In fact, CryptoCares has no intention of supporting FIAT at all.
According to their fundraising campaign, they are seeking a small amount of capital to be able to pay three employees, including the founder, for three months worth of development and marketing for the platform. As of yet, it doesn't seem any groundwork has been made on the actual platform prior to the creation of the fundraiser.
One may find it ironic that such a project would be fundraising for capital in such a traditional FIAT way, but I suppose without the very service they are hoping to provide, it would be difficult to do otherwise.
I did some research to see if Crypto Crowdfunding was already an existing thing and found several results, but all of them seemed to be geared towards raising capital for other new crypto startups, and not for individual or nonprofit charitable needs. Though it is possible it does exist and I missed it (let me know in the comments if you know of one).
Perhaps we could use a fundraising site on the decentralized web. It would certainly benefit those of us who aren't fortunate enough to own an entire bitcoin. However, it is very possible such a site would end up rife with scammers as tends to be the case in the crypto world. Though this wouldn't necessarily be a failing on the part of this theoretical site so much as the failure of our community to foster empathy amongst its ranks. The site would likely need a very effective moderation system if it has any hope of succeeding.
One of the FAQ questions on the fundraiser was asking why fundraising in cryptocurrency would ever be necessary. Their answer is that FIAT is a dying form of currency and that crypto is the future so moving the act of fundraising over to a crypto oriented platform would be beneficial in the long run. I wouldn't disagree.
The project certainly has potential, but would do well to move forward with caution. I do wish them the best though and hope they have a successful fundraising journey.
