Cryptocurrency lending platform BlockFi revealed on Saturday that its platform has encountered an unexpected client data breach after one of its marketing and sales merchants Hubspot suffered a hack.

Hubspot is a client relationship management platform that offers several solutions for inbound marketing, sales, and customer service. In separate statements, BlockFi, Pantera Capital, and Swan Bitcoin revealed that a hacker illegally gained access to one of Hubspot employees’ accounts causing a significant client data leak.

“In the spirit of transparency, we wanted to make our clients aware of this incident before bad actors could use this information to their detriment. We felt time was of the essence, and we are expediently working through our investigation,” a BlockFi issued statement read.

BlockFi has also revealed that any data related to BlockFi’s internal systems, client funds, BlockFi account passwords, government-issued ID numbers, and social security numbers were not affected during the security breach. The cryptocurrency platform is currently investigating the ongoing breach and is expected to report additional information to impacted clients.

A statement released by Hubspot further elaborated on the situation:

“While our investigation is still underway and we continue to learn additional details, our initial assessment suggests that data was exported from fewer than 30 HubSpot portals, all of whom have been notified. At this time, we believe this to be a targeted incident focused on customers in the cryptocurrency industry.”
