Leading Canadian news and culture outlet Vice Media Group has opened a virtual HQ inside Decentraland. The HQ will house the first fully native newsdesk built inside the metaverse and serves as an office for Vice’s new innovation lab. The HQ was designed by BIG Architects, marking the first construction by a major architectural powerhouse inside the Decentraland virtual world.
A tweet from Decentraland announced the move and subsequent housewarming party that takes place Feb 11, 2022at 6:00 pm UTC. At writing, more than 200 people have RSVP’d To attend the virtual opening of the headquarters.

A news desk could see Vice, start to tackle metaverse news as well as real-world events. Vice has carved a solid niche delivering culturally focussed, engaging, and sometimes outright controversial content since 1994.
They could potentially cover and report on the happenings and events inside the growing Decentraland platform. Similar to outlets such as the Somnium Times, which is dedicated to metaverse news exclusively from the Somnium Space virtual world. However, at this stage, amidst a flurry of metaverse HQ’s popping up, Vice could simply be jumping on the bandwagon. Nonetheless, securing a spot sooner rather than later feels like a valid move.

While the Fashion Street Estate in Decentraland sold for a $2.42 million price tag earlier this year. Additionally, McDonalds filed ten patents this week as they lay the foundations to launch a virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods with further plans to offer home delivery.
It appears the hype started by Facebook’s Meta announcement in late 2021 continues to drive interest from both retail and commercial entities as the battle for relevance and eyeballs continues.
