Welcome to the first of a series of articles looking at how to get the absolute most bang for your buck when playing Splinterlands. These articles should be very helpful for any players trying to grow their collection in meaningful ways with just the DEC earned from events or any other players at the beginning of their SPLINTERLANDS journey!

In my short time in the Splinterlands it has immediately clear that when you need to field an effective army on very little mana WATER is nearly unmatched. Not only that but all the monsters involved are also some of the most affordable in the game! Let’s first take a look a a very spikey boy who a lot of this revolves around.
SPINEBACK TURTLE
PRICKLY WHEN WET
For between $.10-20BCX for a 4 mana monster with huge defensive potential everything about Spineback Turtle screams value. For a very small investment you can quickly find yourself with a beast on your hands that’s happy to hold the front lines as cheaply as possible. At level 5 the Turtle hits for 2 while carrying 2 shield and 6 HP. Not only that but the Thorns ability granted at all levels above 4 make the Turtle all the more deadly, even when playing defense!

SEA MONSTER
THE YARDSTICK
Ahhhhh Nessy, everyone’s favorite frontline sea serpent. The sea monster is one of those creatures that comes to be the yardstick you measure all others by. It’s effective on nearly all levels, sells for about $.05BCX.
At level 6 this monster is hitting for 5 a turn, landing extra chip damage with thorns, AND healing itself. What it lacks in armor it makes up for in a high base HP which can make it useful in a variety of mana caps.
If you have a bit more DEC to spend Sea Monster is one of those Monsters worth considering paying the extra to collect a Gold copy of. At the time of this posting there are still about 15 listing with Gold Sea Monster for <$5BCX. For a card this useful this should be a consideration for you.
CRUSTACEAN KING
PAGING DR ZOIFBURG
Here he is yall. The blue that so often holds your team together: The Crustacean King! The Tank Heal ability is second to none when it comes to usefulness and the King here has it at level one. At level three the king gets a small offense of his own and later at level 6 he gains Protect and holy shit. At that point he is some sort of wall tossing +2 armor on ALL friendly Monsters while healing your tank every damn turn. For 3 mana and <$1BCX he should genuinely be one of the first WATER cards you grab.
MEDUSA
EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED
Now that we have a variety of frontline options and a healer worth playing in every single game all that’s left to find are some cheap build-around cards to increase the overall power level of your WATER options. When it comes to bang for the buck Medusa is an incredible value and her skillset is one that shines when paired with the other entries on this list.
For a meager $.26BCX you get a creature with Stun. If you’ve played a video game or two you might have noticed that the ability to Stun targets is fundamentally useful. When teamed with the overall high base attack statistics of the Turtle and Sea Monster Medusa can take over a game deceptively quickly for a 4-cost creature.
Some quick math:
XIA SEACHAN - Spiked Turtle – Medusa – Crustacean King – Highland Archer = 16
This is one of my absolute favorite base line-ups in the game and it’s incredible power doe its low mana and DEC cost inspired this series of articles.
