Speaking crypto 101: fomo

The crypto ecosystem has no shortage of jargon. Ambiguous phrases, acronyms and newly formed words that had almost no meaning a decade ago (or even a few months ago for many) are now widely used market signals informing strategic investment decisions. As Cryptocurrencies are natively digital, it is important to understand the vernacular, usage, and meaning of the digital vocabulary that has formed within the space.

FOMO- Fear Of Missing Out

Everyone has been there. Silently brooding, wondering what could have been. Presently fearing future regret. When the current anxieties outweigh the methodical risk assessment. While everyone else is talking about how brilliant they are, how their portfolios have grown, and how much fun they are having, others stew in their own self inflicted anxiety. Indeed, the grass does always seem to be greener on the other side of the fence.

FOMO or Fear of Missing Out is the desire to constantly stay connected with what others are doing. In the crypto context, this is the trading activities, market sentiments, project milestones, and personal setbacks of others. Because of crypto’s digital nature, FOMO can be found at every corner of the ecosystem. Engagement, as both a content provider and consumer, has been the key ingredients driving FOMO and perpetuating the cycle of fear.

Investors, traders, and enthusiasts are constantly bombarded with the next best thing, the latest innovation, or market opportunity. Some may deliver envy inducing returns. Regardless of its lifecycle, each of these will be opportunities will be passes, exits, or misses from countless number of investors.

No one wants to miss out on that unicorn opportunity, seeing it pass by while wondering what could have been. Especially when they knew about it but didn't have the resources or courage to make the commitment. While FOMO has driven returns before, it is more commonly associated with those reaching a market opportunity too late, when the green pastures of the other side of the fence been grazed, laid claim to by the assertive and faster moving bulls.
