Puma prepares for metaverse with latest trademark registration

Sports apparel manufacturer Puma has stepped up its plans to enter the metaverse business. Following its latest job opening to hire an expert in Web 3.0 space, the clothing brand has now filed for a trademark registration that suggested the company is looking to offer virtual goods.

Filing on January 11, Puma has filed for three applications with plans to offer downloadable virtual goods for use in virtual worlds, downloadable software for providing access to an online virtual environment, and “an interactive website, and computer application software for virtual reality game services”, amongst several other metaverse-related services.

According to the application, some of the virtual goods it plans to release are footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, bags, sports bags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys, and accessories as well as offering digitally animated and non-animated designs and characters, avatars, digital overlays, and skins.

The trademark filing was first revealed by trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben Intellectual Property in a Monday.

Previously, Puma a job opening to look for a Manager for its Digital Culture division. The job description required the applicant sufficient knowledge of the Web3 space including NFTs, the metaverse, DAOs, and more.

Among sports apparel brands, and are scaling up their business in metaverse and Web 3.0. Both the companies applied for similar metaverse-related trademarks and job postings last year, with Nike applying to trademark phrases like its “Just Do It” slogan and “Swoosh” logo.
