Maximizing Your Splinterlands SPS Airdrop with the Card Market

The Splinterlands community has been abuzz with talk of the latest news: The upcoming SPLINTERLANDS governance token, Splintershards (SPS). As a result of the news, the community is growing at an even greater pace. The last of Splinterlands' land is flying off the shelves and new people are flocking to the game like never before. And they're all excited for good reason.

This governance token is so thoroughly and well designed that its release will be groundbreaking in many ways. Not only will it add tremendous value on multiple levels and a greater degree of player control over the game, but the release itself will reward those who have accumulated Splinterlands assets over the last three years by giving them a substantial airdrop of the new token.

In this article I won't be getting too deep into the functionality details of the SPS token, but you can find them all at the SPLINTERSHARDS WHITEPAPER. Today I'd like to offer some guidance on one thing: Maximizing your airdrop as a Splinterlands player or collector.

How the Airdrop will Work

The greatest thing about this airdrop (greater even than the intrinsic value of a free token) is the way that it was designed. Many airdrops create an atmosphere of hurry up and dump by taking a snapshot of some required amount of holding in a certified wallet. Such systems always come with many trader types who tend to lack education of and loyalty to the project in question. They encourage participants to dump not only the new airdropped coin immediately after for whatever they are able to get for it, but to dump the requirement coin as well because they probably never would have acquired it if it weren't for the airdrop.

The upcoming SPS airdrop will solve these problems in unique ways. First, instead of a one-time drop, this airdrop will take place every day for 1 year. This will encourage long term participation and commitment to get the greatest rewards. Those who are looking for a quick flip-and-quit should have no interest, and the airdrops will be given to those players, collectors, investors and fans who really deserve them and have the best interests of the game at heart. Second, there is no minimum requirement of holding necessary. The amount of each account's daily airdrop will be determined by a point system based on the size and relative value of their collection. Those who have supported the game will simply be rewarded daily on a level proportional to their support.

The Point System

13.33% of the total supply of SPS tokens will be allocated to the player airdrop over the first year of Splintershards' release. This is a total of 400,000,000 tokens out of the total supply of 3 billion. That means that about 1.1 million SPS tokens will be airdropped each day. By accumulating points according to the system below, players earn a greater share in the daily distribution of tokens.

You'll notice that all types of Splinterlands assets are equated to points in this system. So it doesn't matter whether you prefer to keep your booster packs unopened, if you hoard Dark Energy Crystals or if you want to be a land baron. Your airdrop points are fairly easy to calculate.

I'd like to focus mainly on the first two lines of the above chart - Collection Power and DEC (Dark Energy Crystals).

The Room to Grow

Lately, Splinterlands cards have been growing in value quite substantially. In fact, over the last year, Splinterlands asset value has seen about a 15x gain across the board. Even through crypto dips and bear markets, many Splinterlands collectors have witnessed the values of their accounts continue to grow. Here's how you can do some cleanup of your account to earn greater SPS rewards in the upcoming airdrops (beginning in July).

Collection Power - Collection Power is used to limit the League in which a Splinterlands player is allowed to play. It is directly associated to one thing: The combined DEC burn value of all cards in a player's collection. Every card can be burned for DEC, as pictured below, and since DEC is basically pegged at 1000 DEC = $1, the burn value becomes the value floor for each card.

Looking back at the Point Chart from above, you'll notice that DEC held in your account is worth an equal number of points to the combined Collection Power of your cards (1 per 1). DEC is always worth approximately the same (1000 = $1), so even in the above example image, you can see that the lowest sale value of that particular card is currently $0.72. Let me break this down for you.

If I were to sell that single BCX card for the lowest market price, I would be given 720 DEC as payment. That 720 DEC would be worth 720 points in the airdrop. By continuing to hold the card in my collection, it will account for only 200 points. So by selling this card and holding the DEC instead, I will gain more than 3x the SPS airdrop points.

Let's look at a more extreme example. Below is the disgustingly cute Byzantine Kitty, one of the more recent Legendary Summoner releases. Look at the numbers there, then I'll break this example down in a similar way.

Holding this card in my collection is only worth 1000 points toward the daily SPS airdrop. But by selling it on the incredibly active market for nearly $30, I can reap a 28x gain on those airdrop points. The downside is of course that I will no longer have that card (if you even consider that a downside), but there is no argument. Greater points come from selling cards and holding Dark Energy Crystals.

Pick Through your Collection

As we get closer to the beginning of the airdrop, I will definitely be picking through my massive collection, looking for cards that I've been holding onto not because I play with them, but because I was waiting for an opportunity. This may be the opportunity I have been waiting for. I can think of no better time to do some spring cleaning on my account. ;)

Remember, you can always use DEC to purchase Booster Packs at a rate of 2000 DEC per pack. If you have high hopes to stack or open a bunch of packs from the upcoming release, Chaos Legion, this spring cleaning could be your best chance to do so. You can hold the pile of DEC or perhaps even provide DEC liquidity to one of the LPs for additional rewards, in which case you'll still get airdrop points. Then when Chaos Legion comes out, you can go to town and spend a huge pile to get the best possible rates on pack purchases.
