Kryptomon - gen 0 vs gen 100

Hello trainers, welcome back to the wonderful world of Kryptomon. If you haven’t already, make sure you take a look at our previous articles on Phase 0, Phase 1 and Phase 2 to get an overall understanding of the Kryptomon roadmap.

It’s been an interesting few days, with the leaderboard being closed 10 days early and new trainers getting to know each other in Discord. Maybe it’s because everyone is expecting to see their ranks on the leaderboard move upwards once we start scrubbing fake referrals and bots, but the most popular question that constantly seems to be on everyone’s mind is?—?What is the difference between the various generations of Kryptomons?

Well speculate no longer! This article aims to answer precisely just that, so let’s get cracking!

It’s all about the numbers

Number of eggs per generation at launch

From the chart above, it’s clear that the earlier the generation, the rarer the Kryptomon. Of the 10,000 Kryptomons on launch day, only 100 will be Gen 0 while there will already be 3,600 Gen 7 Kryptomons.

Purely from a collectors perspective, this alone makes the earlier generation Kryptomons quite valuable. No more Gen 0 Kryptomons will ever be created so if you’ve managed to get one, hang on to it! Who knows what it might be worth in a couple of months?

From a gameplay perspective however, does a rarer Gen 0 mean that it’ll definitely be stronger than a Gen 7? The answer is quite simply?—?No! While we wanted to reward our early supporters with something that will continue to appreciate in value over time, we had to ensure it didn’t break the game balance and we think we’ve come up with a system that’ll make everyone happy.

Battle strength

Having a rarer Gen 0 or Gen 1 Kryptomon does not instantly mean that you will defeat another trainer that battles with a Gen 100 Kryptomon. Because the genes of all Kryptomon are procedurally generated, it’s very possible that a Gen 100 Kryptomon will have stronger genes than a Gen 0. The reverse of that is also true, since a Gen 100 might just end up having terrible genes when it hatches.

But what if a Gen 0 Kryptomon battles with another Gen 100 Kryptomon while having the exact same genes?

In this case, there will be absolutely no difference in battle strength between the two! Both are just as likely to win and it’ll now be dependent on which trainer has the better fighting strategy. In fact, a Gen 0 and Gen 100 Kryptomon with the exact same genes will be identical in every single way except one?—?breeding

Breeding and mutation

As we’ve previously hinted before, there is a possibility of encountering a mutation in the genes of the offspring when breeding. For example?—?if you were to breed two fire Kryptomons together, you would expect the child to also be a fire Kryptomon. However, mutation might see you getting a water Kryptomon instead.

The only game where Fire + Fire = Water

Again, we don’t want to give away too much (half the fun is in experimenting with breeding and figuring it out yourselves), so here’s just a short overview of how mutation works.

  1. The lower the generation of Kryptomon used when breeding, the lower the possibility of mutation happening.
  2. Mutation might or might not happen when breeding. Just because a Gen 100 breeds with another Gen 100 does not guarantee mutation, and two Gen 0’s breeding MIGHT see mutation happening. It’s a percentage chance.
  3. Mutation causes the genes of a Kryptomon to vary wildly compared to its parents genes.
  4. Mutation is inherently negative, so most of the time you’ll end up with a weaker Kryptomon. However! You’ll notice in point 3 we specifically said genes can “vary wildly”, which means that in rare occurrences you can also get a much stronger Kryptomon when mutation occurs.

And that’s it! That’s all the information you’re going to get right now and you’ll just have to discover the rest yourself. ?? Don’t be a stranger and jump on the Discord and Twitter to let us know your thoughts and guesses on what else might be in store for you when it comes to mutation.

Ending Thoughts

As always, because of our co-creation promise to you, remember that the information in this article is still subject to change. We’ll be releasing all of this functionality on the testnet throughout Q3 so that everyone can get a feel for it and offer any feedback they might have.

With newer Kryptomons being hatched everyday once Phase 1 begins, the generation count will only increase. This further reinforces the fact that mutation is definitely going to play a large part in breeding, but remember that it’s not the be all and end all. A Gen 0 might be more “stable” when it comes to breeding but none of that matters while in a tournament in the middle of a battle! The effort you put into training your Kryptomon and thinking up suitable battle strategies is what’s going to matter most. So if you didn’t manage to snag yourself a lower gen Kryptomon, don’t fret!

Signing off for now. See you in game, fellow trainer.
