How to set yourself up for success

You can make it difficult and even almost impossible for yourself to fail by setting yourself up for success.

How?

By building habits that build you.

In this post, I will be sharing with you, two basic strategies for setting yourself up for success.

1. Have a plan

There's a popular saying that...

"if you fail to plan, you're planning to fail ~Benjamin Franklin.

And there's a million-dollar truth in that statement.

A plan can be a sketch or document that contains details of what you want to achieve (your goals). And how you hope to achieve them (your strategies).

So, in simple terms, we can say that a plan is a statement of your goals and strategies.

You can have it in a document or in your brain. But writing it down in a place that you can reference when needed will help you build the initial commitment to the plan.

One of the myths and reasons why many people don't develop plans is that it makes you rigid in a fast-changing world.

That's a lie.

A plan gives you a destination and an idea of how to get there.

It doesn't stop you from taking a different route when new and better information presents itself.

In fact, it helps you to remain focused in the face of changing options.

And if you derail or change course, you can easily look back and tell exactly where, how, and why you vied off the original course.

Plans can be adapted to suit changing circumstances and help you remain focused on your course.

Your strategies and procedures might change but your goals usually hardly change except you're making an entirely new plan to replace the old one. Like changing your career.

And if you're one of the rare people who change careers too frequently, you have a more deep-rooted problem than a poor plan.

In that case, you need to sit down with yourself or someone and determine what you want to do with your life.

Then focus on developing the best and most fun strategies and procedures to living the life you've set for yourself to live.

Build the right habits.

Did you know that around 40% of everything we do on a daily basis is habitual?

This realisation should make you sit back and think deeper about the habits you have developed over these years.

And even more deeply, about the habits, you are currently building.

Build habits that will build you ~Mike Maker

The key words there are build and habits

Because we're talking about taking deliberate steps to discover the right habits you need to achieve your goals.

And committing yourself to develop these habits on a daily basis so that success becomes natural.

Part of this process is having a routine.

If you have put serious efforts into your plans, you will already have an idea of what you want and how to get it.

The next step is to develop daily habits and routines that will keep you on the track you have set for yourself to follow.

A successful man builds habits that builds him.

These routines, if followed for long enough becomes a natural part of your daily life (habits).

And this makes achieving success easy and simple.

Two things you just keep in mind for this to work are:

  1. The habits and daily routines you're building must be ones that help you reach your goal(s).

  2. Discipline (lots of it) is required especially in the early stages to build rock-solid habits and maintain a "success routine".

But if you can do this, then success will become a natural occurrence for you.

Conclusion

If you have no idea what you want and how to get it how will you ever get it?

That's why you need to have a plan.

But having a plan is not enough. You need to follow through and discipline yourself to commit to the plan until you reach your goal.

However, this is easier said than done.

Which is why you need to build "success habits". And commit to a daily routine that will make achieving your goals a normal part of your living.

Finally, surround yourself with the right people and resources that both remind and challenge you to keep to the cause.
