There are a lot of interactive educational tools in the technology space, but few are as accessible or user friendly as Hack the Box (HTB). I came by them through an educational video on Virtual Machines and Linux Basics by Network Chuck. After taking advantage of a referral offer, I got hooked on the curriculum and hands on approach. The flow of each model consists of some explanation surrounding the content followed by some application-based challenges done through an integrated virtual machine (that you can kill and reset as much as you want). You would be surprised how quickly you find yourself stretching yourself to do more advanced processes.
The modules cover everything from learning basics, WordPress, Linux, Nmap, Password Cracking, Bash, LDap, File Inclusion, Python, OSINT, and SQL. There is an incentive program that uses “Cubes” like a currency to unlock modules and pay for the curriculum. You can of course purchase cubes to move forward or complete tasks within the lessons to earn cubes and reduce the expense of future modules. This feature pushes you to really try and master each section before moving on.
I have not completed all the modules and found myself using the Linux lessons more than the others. The courses have helped me tremendously and I will continue my studies on the academy. What is offered is an extremely streamlined process for anyone new to tech or those seeking higher level certifications. All in all, I would give HTB a 9.2/10. One of my only critiques is that there is not a lot of engagement or social portion. It is completely individual and self-paced. I think a community component could add a lot of incentive for more users and for current users to stay engaged.
