Last year Burger King launched crypto currencies into the fast food market with a new marketing campaign. Anyone who purchased over $5 worth of food in the BK mobile app from November 1 - 21, 2021 would enter a drawing to earn a Bitcoin, Ethereum, or a Dogecoin redeemable through a Robinhood account. The campaign gained the attention of the media and numerous crypto influencers with their bold move. Would this new marketing campaign lead to a new wave of crypto-focused marketing and increase retail adoption of crypto?
Burger King Crypto Contest Rules
The marketing campaign appeared like a great opportunity with decent odds of winning. The following are the estimated values for the coins at the time and odds for winning each coin:
The deadline to claim prizes was December 17, 2021. According to the contest rules, every winner was to be publicly listed on the promotion administrator’s website at the end of the contest.
Marketing Campaign Review - It Worked Well
This marketing campaign made me decide to take the leap into crypto and open a Robinhood account. If a major U.S. company was using cryptocurrency in a marketing campaign, it’s something I need to understand. For the next 21 days, I ate Burger King every day to try to win one of the coveted Bitcoin or Ethereum.
The campaign worked well. After each mobile order, Burger King sent me an email with a link to Robinhood to claim my crypto within a few minutes. The link would send me to the Robinhood app where I could login and claim my reward. Once I claimed the reward, it was revealed to me which coin I received. The whole campaign was convenient and a nice way to receive a reward.
I ended up with 21 Dogecoin. A little disappointing, but the odds are most likely for that result.
Marketing Campaign Results Are Still Not Posted
I wanted to check the results of the marketing campaign to see how many people won Bitcoin and Ethereum. As of the date of this writing the winners list has yet to be posted. Research online has yet to find any records of anyone winning a single Bitcoin or Ethereum.
The reputation of early crypto projects has been marred by scams including pump-and-dump schemes and bots negating the benefits of its decentralized design. Was this marketing campaign a real opportunity for someone to win Bitcoin and Ethereum or was it just another crypto scam using the hype around these popular cryptocurrencies?
Unfortunately, we won’t know for sure until Burger King releases the winners list, if they ever decide to.
