If you own crypto and use Windows, you need to be wary of a new malware according to Microsoft. In a tweet dated August 27 the Microsoft Security Intelligence (MSI) warned all digital money market goers that their funds might be compromised.

According to the warning, the malware going by the Anubis is a fork from Loki. The malware has the ability to steal your wallet and credit card information and use it to steal your funds. The report adds that Windows users are more exposed to attacks.

Crypto Targeted Malware Discovery

The crypto targeted malware was noticed in June. It is linked to the cyber-criminal dark net. The MSI adds that the malware resembles another Trojan that targets the banking industry riding on the Android operating system on your smartphone.

However, the good news is that the threat can be controlled. The malware has been released in a “controlled manner”. “The campaign appears to target select download URLS and C2 servers” according to the MSI findings

How does the Crypto Targeted Malware work?

If you are a crypto holder you must be an internet goer and that is where you interact with the malware. You might be tricked by some websites to download the Anubis unknowingly. Once downloaded, the malware will steal your wallet or banking details and send it through HTTP POST command through command and control servers.

The process is so discreet that you never know what has hit your wallet. There are no warning signs that your information has been hacked and being used against you. However, you can protect yourself by staying safe online and only visit trusted sites.

Staying safe online is the only way to avoid the crypto targeted malware according to the MSI. Be wary of downloads you interact with and avoid opening emails and attachments that appears suspicious. Clicking on fishy looking links and attachments is the surefire way of installing the malware.
