A Guide on How to Run a Presearch Node on Linux Mint

Do repost and rate:

Introduction

If you have gotten your node registration code, you are now ready to run a PRESEARCH node. In order to get it running, you need to first install Docker. Most likely, you are a Windows user as the vast majority of computer owners run on Microsoft's OS. The installation process is rather straightforward: download the .exe, run it, and install Docker. But what if you're like me who runs on Linux?

I personally use Linux Mint. It is based on Ubuntu and I like the distro for its user-friendliness. I followed the instructions for Ubuntu, taking into account that 20.1 "Ulyssa" is based on Ubuntu 20.04. However, when I tried to run "sudo docker run hello-world", the command failed. Frustrated, I thought that I would have to resort to my old Windows laptop.

However, there is an alternative and much easier way to install Docker on Linux Mint: the Software Manager. The Software Manager is the distro's "app store" where you can search for a program you want like VLC or Audacity and install it. This basically eliminated the headaches that I ran into when I tried to follow Docker's Ubuntu instructions.

My guess is that not many people here on PUBLISH0X use Linux Mint and I may be the only one. But if this guide is able to help even a single person, then mission accomplished.

Installing Docker

1. Open the software manager and search "docker" in the search bar.

2. Select "Docker.io" and click the "Install" button.

I already installed it, so the "Install" button says "Remove" instead.

3. On the terminal, enter the following commands in order:

  • sudo systemctl start docker
  • sudo systemctl enable docker
  • sudo systemctl status docker

If the status says "active (running)", then you're on the right track.

4. Lastly, run the command "sudo docker run hello-world". If you see this message, then Docker is working properly:

Starting Your Presearch Node

1. You need to run the commands "sudo docker pull presearch/node" and "sudo docker run -it --rm -v presearch-node-storage:/app/node --name presearch-node -e REGISTRATION_CODE="Your registration code" presearch/node" without quotations in the terminal.

2. If you see the Presearch logo in the terminal, then you have successfully launched your own Presearch node!

3. But if you want to double check, go to your nodes.presearch.org dashboard to see if your node is currently online. It will look something like this:

If you want to earn PRE tokens, however, then you need to stake at least 1000 PRE into your node. You can earn 0.12 PRE per search, but to accrue 1000 from searching alone will take a long time. My suggestion is to get some PRE through searching to save some cash and purchase the rest to immediately begin earning node rewards.

If you haven't opened a Presearch account and you want to earn node rewards, then you can earn 25 PRE (which would take over 200 searches) through this referral link.
