US Department of Justice Unveils Cryptocurrency Enforcement Framework

The Cyber-Digital Task Force of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) on October 8 published a new document that goes over cryptocurrency applications, pitfalls and risks. It primarily concerns itself with preventing the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activities.

  • Titled Cryptocurrency: An Enforcement Framework, the document extensively details what is a threat to law enforcement, while also documenting potential use cases
  • The analysis has been in the years in the making, created in 2017 by then US Attorney General Jeff Sessions
  • One of the highlights of the framework is the assertion that the DOJ has authority if virtual asset transactions touch financial, data storage or other computer systems, or if crypto is used to import illegal goods and/or provide illegal services
  • US authorities are ramping up their examination of cryptocurrencies, with the CFTC filing charges derivatives platform BitMEX for a lack of KYC/AML procedures
