The Syrians of Guyana

Since around 2015, Guyana has become a transit area for many Syrian migrants. How did this little piece of South America get there?

We must recall certain elements of recent history. Since 2011, more than 4 million Syrians have left their country fleeing the fighting of the civil war, the abuses of the government or terrorist groups like DAESH. Overall the country has become unlivable and desperate.

Contrary to the image spread by the far-right, it is neighboring countries which have welcomed the vast majority of Syrian refugees. That is to say Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq. This map shows it easily.

Among these exiles, some wish to settle in Europe. This continent is a land of asylum, capable of ensuring their security and economic hope. In short, a happier future.

But the road to Europe is complicated. Barriers, guards, sea to cross, smugglers, possibility of internment and return...

We have also seen original routes appear such as the one passing through Guyana. Let's explain. Very often the 1st stage begins in Lebanon or Jordan. Airlines allow travel to Brazil, this country does not require a visa for Syrians who can therefore freely enter. From there they take the road towards the Guyanese border. Once crossed, they register as asylum seekers. The response obtained is often positive and the last step will be to take one last plane back to France.

Why this route? Although complex and seemingly time-consuming, it is actually safer. It takes more time but migrants are less subject to smugglers' scams. And above all the sometimes fatal risk of crossing the Mediterranean is avoided.

In a future message, I will present to you some figures of Syrian migrants. Some have become close friends and made us rediscover the principles of hospitality ! And some new culinary flavors !!
