Personal Security in a Digital Era

Do repost and rate:

Having recently watched "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix (if you haven't seen it yet - do it!), my love and enthusiasm for personal/private online security has only grown. In light of this, I thought I'd share some quick tips on how to better secure yourself on the many digital platforms we have today. These tips are a collection that I have built up from the many hours of content I have watched, as well as from personal experience. I hope they can serve you well and potentially aid in protecting you!

  • Don't use one password for every account you have. Ensure they are all different - and not just different, but strong. Entropy is how much data certain characters contain, and a strong password has a high entropy, not just a lot of numbers/symbols
  • Use an offline password manager. Browser password storage is relatively safe, but try to stick to one browser (Brave, obviously) and only keep essential passwords if necessary
  • Look into using an offline password manager. A great free option is the open-source KeePassXC. Regular updates are what you want to look for with the software.
  • Using one email for every site/signup often inundates your email with spam. Try software like AnonAddy to create "aliases" for one email account. That way you know exactly which alias is linked to which sites. This also prevents widespread data loss in the case of a breach
  • Learn how to use a Virtual Machine. There are free, safe options (Virtual Box) out there that will allow you to compartmentalize your PC and potentially save data. Use VM's when downloading dodgy files - if malware or a trojan does infect it, you can just screenshot back to a fresh install (this is called Sandboxing)
  • Never click PDF links from emails or senders you do not trust entirely. Spear-phishing is when a hacker/threat will use that attached PDF as a carrier for malware or ransomware. Be safe with documents in emails at all costs
  • Install ransomware protection. With the recent surge in ransomware attacks, a program like Acronis will be incredibly useful should an attacker target your system
  • With crypto, always ensure your domain is correct. Many scams use false domains that are only slightly different, and an easy way to combat this is to bookmark sites you visit regularly, like Uniswap or any exchange.
  • VPN's are extremely popular nowadays, so look into which would best serve your personal browsing and downloading preferences. SetupVPN has a lifetime free VPN for your browser, so grab that if you aren't able to afford a full system VPN.

I hope these quick tips were able to help you be more alert and aware of the dangers we face when putting ourselves online. When dealing with cryptocurrencies, your first and most valuable line of defense are the security measures you took to protect your assets.
