On todays day in 1066, the Battle of Hastings was fought. King Harold II of England was defeated by the invading army of , duke of Normandy, in the Norman Conquest, establishing Normans as rulers of England.

In more recent history, in 1890, Dwight D. Eisenhower was born - he was the supreme commander of the Allied forces in western Europe during World War II and also the 34th president of the United States (1953–61).

In 1926, on this day, one of my favourite books was published - English humorist A.A. Milne published Winnie-the-Pooh, a children's book featuring the adventures of a honey-loving bear and his friends, including

Today is also Ralph Lauren’s birthday (1939) American designer as well as the birthday of Sir Cliff Richard (1940) original name Harry Roger Webb, British singer whose “Move It” (1958) was the first great British rock-and-roll

And one last fact for today, on this day in 1806, French troops under Napoleon smashed the outdated Prussian army led by Charles William FerdinandBattle of Jena
