Metaverse News: US Senators Want Meta To Block App For Teenagers

Metaverse news: In the wake of recent news around handling of tech platforms by teenagers, Democratic senators want the Horizon Worlds application blocked for usage by the age group. This could potentially come as a setback for the tech giant, whose growing user base for emerging technologies including Metaverse is dominated by the younger generation. Recently, reports suggested concerns around sharing of intimate images of teenagers on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram. Hence, in the interest of protecting children, the senators are calling on Meta to stop its plan to release a Metaverse app.

Brakes To Metaverse Plans

The senators said Meta failed to protect children and teens despite growing concerns around threats to the younger folks in virtual reality space. According to a Wall Street Journal , Democratic senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg asking for suspension of Meta’s plans to release Horizon Worlds to teens. The Meta game is a virtual reality based online game that allows players move and interact with each other in various worlds that host events, games, and social activities.

The development comes after recent reports that Meta was taking steps to crack down on the spread of intimate images of teenagers on Facebook and Instagram. The senators further said,

“In light of your company’s record of failure to protect children and teens and a growing body of evidence pointing to threats to young users in the metaverse, we urge you to halt this plan immediately.”
