As India progresses with its blockchain adoption, the country is looking to find use cases for the technology for casting votes. A recent report says that India’s Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has said that blockchain technology will soon be employed for elections in the country.
Per the report from Times of India, the turnout of voters for last year’s election was quite poor. Of the 900 million registered voters in India, 300 million could not cast votes, with a majority of them unable to, because they weren’t where they registered.
Arora says that the Electoral Commission is partnering with the Indian Institute of Technology to create a blockchain voting system that will solve this problem. The system will allow votes from all registered voters, regardless of where they did their registration.
The report also says that the number of Indians who move around the country for several reasons such as marriage or jobs, is more than 450 million. Because the move usually isn’t permanent, these migrants are reluctant to begin the registration process again.
Arora revealed this at a summit recently, where he also answered questions about the new method. When asked about the new system’s reliability, the Commissioner said that the machines, just like pretty much any other, could glitch. However, because its blockchain, no one will be able to tamper with it.
Last year, some engineering students in India developed an online blockchain voting platform because they wanted to solve problems of long queues at polling booths.
