After years of calling Bitcoin "criminal money", quite a few mayors and government officials from the United States are becoming lately vocal advocates of blockchain technology and crypto. What was once the currency for money launderers and drug dealers it is now "freeing money".

There is absolutely no doubt Bitcoin hasn't been used for criminal activities. I personally know individuals who admitted they were buying drugs from the dark web many years ago by using Bitcoin. Little did they know that they sold that crypto for cheap, though.

The FBI has arrested a husband and wife in Manhattan for allegedly conspiring to launder swaths of Bitcoin connected to the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack. According to Reuters, over $3.6 billion worth of the asset has already been recovered by law enforcement

Damn it... I though it was supposed that criminals could get away with crypto and circumvent laws and watchdogs, but it seems you can't do that... in any case. If this was a hack of a personal account, the robbers would have probably escaped with the funds and they would have also grinded them by now whipping every trace away, but when you talk centralized exchanges hacks, it is a bit more difficult to do so.

The hack has been reported back in 2016, the addresses have been marked and blockchain technology doesn't care whether you're a mayor using the network or a hacker, it is transparent to whoever has the skills and willingness to dig into it.

My guess is that the Bitfinex hackers who managed to get away with close to 120,000 BTC for a while have foolishly believed that after close to six years from the hack no one would still be on their asses. Bad luck, looks like the FBI was having an eye or their 20 distinct wallets all the time and... busted them.

There's an interesting use of blockchain technology lately and that is in fighting for freedom and fundamental rights, as in the case of the Freedom Convoy from Canada who has 100 million sats donated already and there's also a DAO Supporting WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange

Referring to themselves as “a collective of cypherpunks,” the group behind AssangeDAO has successfully raised over $40 million in Ethereum (ETH) as part of a campaign to get WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange released from prison.

“AssangeDAO raised over $40 million and are preparing to place our first bid on the Clock NFT [non-fungible token] to support the liberation of Assange.”

Proceeds raised from the NFT sale will benefit Julian Assange’s defense fund for legal fees and campaigning to raise awareness about Julian’s extradition case. The Assange family have worked closely with the DAO and endorses its efforts to unite cypherpunks all over the world.”

One way or another blockchain technology is entering the lives of all sort of individuals and it is no longer a matter of "if it will prevail", but when. Governments are corrupt, money they way it is created and exists is corrupt and so are most of the intergovernmental relationships. Blockchain technology is incorruptible by design.

What was once called criminal money might become the sound money of the next decade and century and being an early adopter is truly a blessing.
