So what's an 808?
It's a heavy bass drum derived from Rolands TR-808 Drum Sequencer which was produced between 1980–1980 and it still holds up today. What made the 808 so special was its tone, and had much more foundation compared to the 606 or 909
But why did the 808 sub kick "the 808" stick? I think I've found the answer. The original l808 came with a broken transistor that added a bit of fuzz to the sound, what it did was making the sine wave(audio) more square and hence louder, and so the legend of 808's was born.
Why a square is louder than a sine is not even true, when played with the same gain, they are the same dB, it's how humans perceive audio in short and longer instances that make us think the square is louder. Confused? Check this video.
if you watch the oscilloscope you see there is no difference in dB. the reason why is a sine is semi-silent when it goes from down and up, in a linear curve, while a square goes straight up and down so it is less silent to our ears even though the dB is the same. So due to an error in manufacturing, a drum machine from the '80s ended up being relevant in the 2021s.
