e-Sports and streaming have taken the world by storm over the last decade. And there seems to be no stopping them. E-Sport has become a billion-dollar industry on its own, and streamers have become so popular that they have garnered the attention of mainstream celebrities like Drake.
*Note, by French being French, I do not mean it in a bad way. It is simply my way of saying that French people in general do things their own way. So it is not a knock on you if you happen to be French or French people in general.
Then there is France
France has always seemed to match to their own beat. And their influence can be seen, felt, and heard still to this day. There are plenty of things that originated in France that have been adopted by the rest of the world. But it appears that they are not all to keep on the opposite. The latest vers they have added appears to be a ban on the use of English gaming terms.
This is done, at least officially, to ease the understanding for the french, mind you the french people they are talking about are the non-gamers. And to try and keep the french language as pure as possible. So now you have to refer to e-Sport as "jeu video de competition", and if you are a streamer, guess what. You are now "joueur-animateur en direct". And the list goes on and on.
Why now?
Well, I can of course only speculate as to why this is being done now. As the elections were just held and won by Emmanuel Macron around a month ago. His competition was a right-wing "supporter", for the lack of a better word. So this might be a play for those people. To try and stop the opposition from growing.
But it could also very well just be France being France. And they see the French language becoming anglicized, and they could very well see this as a huge problem. And this is a way to try and stop it or at least slow it down.
But France is not the only country to take action in this type of way. When I was in Chine around 2000. We had a good old laugh over the google translation on the back of some of the bootleg DVDs we found there. One, in particular, has stuck with me for all these years. It is from the movie Stealth, where an rogue AI must be stopped. And the English google translated Chinees had a race that none of us could make sense of. That was "SailMotherUp".
When we asked out Chinees friend about it, he read the Chinese text and then started to laugh. He then told us that in an attempt to keep the Chinese language from splitting into several. They had banned the creation of new signs. This meant that when they translated new words to Chinese they had to reuse old signs. And this is what happened here, the google translate had simply just translated the signs as they were.
And in case you are wondering what the translation was, SailMotherUp is the three Chinees signs that are used to type aircraft carrier.
There was also a ban on English used in stores in Quebec a few years ago. But again French people being French. But I have no idea if that got reversed or not.
How do crypto fit into this
As crypto has the fastest adoption rate of any new technology, even faster than the internet. And most terms associated with it are either acronyms of English terms or direct English terms. I do not think that crypto is too far from suffering a similar faith. Especially as its adoption of it keeps spreading among the global populous.
This might mean that crypto in France is facing a similar faith in one or two years' time. The only thing I think that can stop this would be if the adoption rate in France is so fast that they have no real-time to react. It is everywhere all at once and everyone has learned the terms already. That might stop crypto from suffering a similar faith. But then again, it might not.
