Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida said on Tuesday that his office is working with state agencies to create a provision that allows businesses to pay their taxes in cryptocurrencies.
“I’ve told the state agencies to figure out ways, where if a business wants to pay tax in cryptocurrency to Florida, we should be willing to accept that,” DeSantis said in a press conference Tuesday. “We’re working through that.”
Ron DeSantis, who has been a governor of Florida since 2019, made these statements during the signing of a financial literary bill that will require high school students to take a financial literacy course.
At the signing event, the governor was responding to several questions posed by the media, and mentioned that the state should adopt “something like a bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.”
DeSantis is one of the several governors in the United States looking to adopt cryptocurrencies. A crypto-proponent, he made a similar proposal recently which would have administered funds to explore blockchain technology for some state-backed pilot programs. However, the proposal was rejected by the state legislature.
While DeSantis is certainly pro-crypto, he is a well-known CBDC critic. Comparing the polarizing nature of Bitcoin and CBDC, he noted that “centrally controlled” currencies present “a lot of hazards”. He said:
“I worry about the amount of power that would give someone — an essential authority — to basically be able to shut off access to purchasing certain goods. We’d be in uncharted territories.”
