The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking a director to head its new National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET).

A recent job listing posted by the DOJ says that the agency is looking for someone with at least five years of post J.D. (Juris Doctor) legal experience and an extensive understanding of blockchain and crypto technology.

According to the job listing, the successful applicant will spearhead a team of prosecutors that will investigate and prosecute cases related to cryptocurrencies. The director of NCET will also be responsible for prioritizing investigations and leading the DOJ’s efforts to combat the use of crypto assets as a criminal tool.

Earlier this month, the DOJ created the NCET in response to what the agency sees as a wide range of crimes being perpetrated through the use of digital assets.

“Because cryptocurrency is used in a wide variety of criminal activity, from being the primary demand mechanism for ransomware payments, to money laundering and the operation of illegal or unregistered money services businesses, to being the preferred means of exchange of value on ‘dark markets’ for illegal drugs, weapons, malware and other hacking tools, the NCET will foster the development of expertise in cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies across all aspects of the Department’s work.”
