We are witnessing the shocking results of economic war and sanctions against a country with a powerful military. Russia has warned over and over that the actions of the West will be considered acts of war. The West does not listen nor care about the possible consequences.
We have been witnessing governments controlling the flow of currency from countries that are not “friendly” to the West but a more recent trend is happening. Credit Card companies are restricting what purchases can be made with their product.
Recently Visa and Mastercard (there is speculation American Express will do the same) have restricted the use of their credit cards for individuals within Russia. These companies are stating that they are not allowing Russian citizens to purchase items outside of Russia while others are restricted from purchasing Russian goods.
This is taking economic war to a whole new level. We are witnessing Russia bombs killing civilians within Ukraine and now corporations are using their influence to hurt citizens within Russia. We are already witnessing long lines at banks as people are rushing to pull their currency out of the system and now Western corporations are restricting the use of their platform for citizen populations. This just seems mean. Why attack innocent civilians for the actions of their government? This action will only push Russia deeper into chaos while people have lost their ability to purchase products to survive.
Of course the argument is that this is only for products outside of the county and against those who want to purchase Russian products. What do we not understand that we are living in a global society with a completely integrated supply chain? How many products will not be able to be made, in and outside of Russia, due to inability to get supplies to make the products. Sure the response will be to make the products domestically but this solution takes time and will not happen overnight.
And since when do corporations have the authority to impact individuals lives negatively during a times of crisis? Maybe we have allowed our corporations to gain too much power and now they have the ability to be used as weapons against other societies?
If this is the case, we are going to be headed down a very dark path. Corporations are restricting what products can be purchased with their currency while limiting already impacted individuals from using their “lifeline” they had planned to use during a time of crisis.
We have lost our minds at this point. Understanding that we are going into a phase that many countries consider a “do or die” situation and we can see this will only escalate. Other countries will be brought to their knees and their corporations will need to be used as weapons against their advisories. This could get really ugly real fast!
War is devastating to everyone involved. Our hearts go out to those who are currently running from bombs and bullets and we hope that these images will stay away from our lives. The problems is we all are so integrated that this war will cause everyone of us to feel its consequences.
We have just begun to see where this is headed. The one thing we know for-sure is that the more countries/corporations that are involved, the more damage will be caused.
We are already witnessing changes in our society that will impact our grandchildren. Now as more countries/corporations get desperate, we must consider if our grandchildren will have a future at all when this is all over?
