Cars are actually more dangerous than guns

If you were only reading the headlines (or not following at all like a real champ), you might not know that, a few weeks ago, the media kind of brought racism into one of the most recent broadcasted shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, that wasn't there to begin with. This then sparked the media flame in the days following...

Even NPR did it before they kind of corrected themselves the next day and the days following when the journalists knew more about what they were reporting. Here is a link to the New York Times if you want to read about it. I rediscovered music on the radio around that time, as it was also that time of the year when my local NPR station incessantly asks for donations (seriously, it's like every two minutes or less).

Either way, this matters to me because my wife is asian and my Ancestry.com analysis told me that 1 to 2% of my DNA is also of asian descent, which makes my daughter about half. Not that you can necessarily tell.

Fun fact: Ancestry.com also refers to "Jewish" as a race rather than a religion. Ancient texts including the Bible kind of do that, too, but nowadays that would probably be considered politically incorrect.

... After I typed that, I figured that since I'm looking for jobs and actually kind of do have the skillset for a computer geneticist, I would do a PREsearch. I found a lead for a staff scientist role on flexjobs.com. I tried to click on the link, but there was no link. Perhaps I need to make an account, I thought...

Then I got

... To be fair, the "special offer" gets you 50% off, and that is less than I've invested in some shitty yield farms, but I thought those might make me some money instead of not get me a job...

Maybe the position had already been filled...

Back to the point, though, I really want to hear about the potential mass shooter that is brought to justice by some concealed carrier. Maybe the carrier pops him before he kills anyone else. That would be just fine. I think I'd rather the malicious one be dead than fed in prison for life. Either way, it would make the whole gun narrative more appealing if people actually used guns to bring justice to the world.

Guns can be hard to use, though, and not everyone has one. Honestly, I'm more afraid of cars...

I used to hate SUVs and the people that I didn't know driving them. They're so big! What do you even need that for? Are you hauling stuff or driving on uneven terrain?

If you're using it for it's intended purpose, that's okay.

At some point at the beginning of 2018, I had the realization that there are people who drive an SUV, not because they are selfish, but because they genuinely love someone(s) and fear for their safety. With a child, that gets more real. I might even end up buying an SUV some day. If that time comes, I know there will be a more fuel-efficient option.

I don't know anyone who has been shot to death, but two of my friends' fathers and two of the smart kids in my high-school graduating class were killed by drunk drivers. Since I started the list, more friends or acquaintances have died of a heroin overdose than in a car accident. I can think of four that I knew personally and more that I didn't. And this is all before I turned 30; mostly in high-school or the early 20's. That's crazy.

All things considered, it's actually is kind of a privilege to make it to your 30's. If you don't consider it to be, maybe you should.

Just a thought for today.
