The fire started at about 18:40 local time, and media outlets say the fire was "fast moving". Described as the worst fire in the country's history, 6 people were killed in the fire while another 5 died after jumping from a balcony on the 11th floor. Among the dead are 3 children while among the injured include 2 firefighters and a police officer.

As of now, police officials and investigators have not yet publicly stated the exact cause of the fire, though governor Ivo Vondrak of the Moravia-Silesia region said that the fire appears to have been deliberately started. While police have not yet confirmed those claims, they have confirmed that one person was arrested at the scene of the fire.
