Theta Edge Node - One Client... Many Ways to Earn TFUEL
If you have been following Theta, you know about the strides they have made in the past year; amazing if you ask me! In particular if you have been running a THETA Edge Node or been thinking about the benefits of running a node on your own - read on for my experiences.
There are no less than three (3) ways to Earn Theta Fuel (TFUEL) just from running one Edge Node instance:
- Edge Cache (AKA Bandwidth sharing) - earnings are based on multiple factors, the largest of which is Bandwidth efficiency
- Edge Compute (AKA Folding @ Home) you will see the FHS services running on your computer - you can select how much CPU to share from the power mode selector (Light, Medium or Heavy).
- Video Transcription Service - converting video formats from one encoding format to another format
My recent Theta Edge Node experience has shown that the Edge Cache earning is highly variable and in the past few months I have not earned much just in regard to sharing Bandwidth; which is fine. My experience when running Edge Compute, I burned up two laptop fans running on the Medium setting - not cool (pun intended). After moving to a net new laptop I am only running it on the Light setting as its too expensive to constantly replace hardware) the earnings are low on the light setting which is fine. Lastly the earnings from the Video Transcription portion are the most lucrative. In that when the client receives these jobs the payouts are nearly a full TFUEL for each job (0.885 was the earnings from the most recent job). Additionally, the jobs are bursty perhaps all tied to the same transcription workload. In that my Node went 9-days without a transcription job, prior to that it handled three jobs in 24-hour time frame and those earnings were 0.8968, 0.944 & 0.8451 respectfully).
Summary Recall the Theta Edge Node runs all of these services concurrently and the jobs get picked up when there is a service call issued; no interaction required on your behalf. Additionally keep in mind the Theta teams works hard at the end of each month to scrape over your TFUEL earnings so ensure you have your address properly defined when you setup your Theta Edge Node.
