Four Princeton University alumni who studied at the Ivy League school in the 1980s and went on to become some of the highest profile individuals in the cryptocurrency world are donating $20 million to their alma mater.

The money will fund a research initiative to “better understand the potential benefits and pitfalls” of blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies, and will be housed in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Princeton said Thursday in a statement.

The donors are Peter Briger Jr. principal and co-chief executive officer of Fortress Investment Group; Joseph Lubin, co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain network and head of ConsenSys; Daniel Morehead, founder and CEO of Pantera Capital; and Michael Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Investment Partners. Novogratz and Lubin were roommates at the university, Lubin said.

Lubin said in an interview that he informed Princeton that he hopes the school will accept his gift in the form of a digital asset.
