How to play Alien Worlds & mine CryptoMonKeys

In the world of NFTs (Non-fungible tokens), one of the prime use-cases involves integration into video games and their economies. As crypto becomes more and more adopted, I see video games as a primary vehicle for adoption. What better place for digital currency than a digital economy? Right now the space is in its infancy, but that doesn't mean there are some entrepreneurial developers experimenting with NFTs as the backbone for their game systems. AlienWorlds is one such game, incorporating NFTs as trading cards used in the game systems. Right now AlienWorlds is barely in beta, and acts as a F2P browser based waiting game. Their roadmap for the future offers a lot of excitement however, bringing the true 'game' part to Alien planets. In this guide I'll go through the ins and outs of AlienWorlds (there honestly isn't much to it yet) and hopefully get you started mining for your very own CryptoMonKey!

The general concept of AlienWorlds is to create a self-contained NFT ecosystem. The AlienWorlds universe consists of various planets that you can visit, represented by a grid of land tiles. Players can 'mine' the land periodically for in game currency TLM that can be used to buy cards and stake ownership on a planet. Each piece of land is also represented by an NFT that denotes ownership. If you own the land that someone mines on, you receive a commission. Thus, it stands for landowners to give incentive to others for mining on their turf. Mining on land owned by the Banano team gives you a chance to mine CryptoMonKeys on top of the in game rewards! Pretty sweet deal. Staking TLM on a planet also contributes to the governance on the planet which will have more weight as features get added to the game.

First things first, you'll need a Wax wallet to play. Wax is a platform used to mint NFTs, similar to Ethereum. The key difference being that Wax is specifically designed for integration into videogames. Fees are essentially nonexistent (which needs to be stated, ETH has been insane with fees lately), which has higher importance in the game world which is rife with microtransactions. Your Wax wallet will maintain your collection of AlienWorld cards and even allow you to sell your cards or trade them on the Wax marketplace.

Creating a wallet is easy; simply go to wallet.wax.io and connect one of your existing social media accounts and you're good to go. When you log in to AlienWorlds, you'll connect your wallet to it by giving permissions through a smart contract. As far as technical aspects go, that's pretty much it. Your wallet will automatically interact with the game as your acquire and use your NFTs. When your wallet is ready, head over to play.alienworlds.io to log in. Here's what you'll see when you do:

The interface has a few items we want to know

-Character name / wallet id

-Character Avatar

-Settings

-Chat

-Time to mine (we'll get to how this is calculated later)

Likewise, the menu reads straight-forward.

-Inventory opens a view to the NFTs you've collected for AlienWorlds.

-Manage Land allows you to set the commission rate on any land you own (and future features such as providing items when people mine, etc.

-Staking allows you to stake your TLM on a planet

-Thunderdome is a placeholder for a future feature that will include a sort of Autobattler style game with Minion NFTs you collect by mining

-Mining opens the Mining window, which is the item we are most concerned with in this guide.

Click on the mining menu next. You'll be prompted with a Planet selection and, as I assume you're here to learn about mining for CryptoMonKeys, you'll want to choose Planet Neri as your option. That will open up the grid of the planet.

Navigate the grid to find different locations to mine by clicking on them. For CryptoMonkeys on Neri, the available coordinates are:

35:5, Tree Forest

18:7, Mountains

5:10, Rocky Crater

7:7, Plains

10:13, Sandy Desert

2:10, Dunes

16:2, Icy Desert

23:18, Methane Swampland

20:5, Geothermal Springs

19:7, Rocky Desert

For this guide I'll be headed to 23:18 Methane Swampland. Click on it (or any other of your choosing) and the Mining Hub will open with your selected land

In the Mining Hub we have four items, one piece of land that we are mining and three tools. You should start with a Standard Shovel, but you'll slowly unlock more tools as you mine. You can also buy tools with Wax at the market. The tools and the land combine together in a calculation that determines how much TLM you are rewarded, how much time between mining attempts, the computing power required to mine (future feature), and the chance you'll acquire an NFT (item).

Going clockwise around a card starting in the top left corner, we have 4 circles that represent the card attributes that go into these calculations.

-Mining power

-Card Type (land or tool)

-NFT %

-Computing work

and in the center

-Charge Time

The land is the most important piece here, as you multiply the sum of the numbers of your tools by the land multiplier. Of note, that the recharge time only takes the highest two numbers between your tools.

So in this scenario my mining power would be:

2.3 * (1 + 9 + 18) = 64.4

The duration between mining attempts would be:

3.5 * (540+1200) = 6090 seconds or 1hr 41min

And my chance for an NFT would be:

2.3 * (0.5 + 2 + 1) = 8.05%

That's all there is to it. When your mining recharge is up, you can click "Mine" at the bottom of the hub, and you'll be rewarded your TLM and NFT after the client performs a Proof of Work calculation. One annoying thing about the game currently, is that getting an NFT has no notification. You'll just have to refresh your wallet UI and subsequently the game (which reconnects the wallet) in order to see your new items. The game is in Beta, so these hiccups are to be expected.

Once you're done mining, you can stake your TLM on a planet by heading to the main menu and clicking on 'Stake'. Which will open up the Planet selection.

The Banano team airdrops MonKeys to players who stake their TLM on Neri - so make sure you do!

All in all, AlienWorlds has been interesting to get involved in. I will admit that I don't really find the game 'fun' in its current state, but I'm assuming it will get more interesting when the Thunderdome is released. There's some information out, but the gist is that you can use your TLM to pit a 'Minion' card that you can acquire while mining into a battle royale with other participants. You equip the minion with a single weapon and let em go. The game does a calculation based on your Minion's strength and weapon vs all the others to determine a winner.

The game is in beta but should improve as features are added. Until then you can still mine for CryptoMonKeys and other NFTs! Have fun :)
