I thought I would share an interesting new innovation in cooling that has recently hit the market. And talk a little about its potential to impact the mining side of crypto.
What is it and what is so special about it?
This new innovation is a solid stat cooling jet chip. Yes, you heard that correctly. a solid-state air jet chip. And these chip is a made to replace fans. As fans are the main type of cooling used well basically everywhere cooling is needed. These new chips have the potential to take cooling to the next level. They work by having a vibrating membrane forcing the air down vertically to the hot surface, and then out the side of the chip. Thanks to the high airspeeds, 120 MPH or 200 km/h, it allows the air to break the boundary layer of hot air molecules. This boundary layer is what stops normal fans from efficiently saturating the air with heat. Allowing them to reach about 25-30% heat saturation. But if you want the air to reach 100% heat saturation you need a high enough speed, so it is able to break the boundary layer.
Let us take a look at some of the advantages of these air jet chips.
- More efficient cooling compared to fans
- Moves larger volumes of air at higher speeds
- No moving parts like in fans (air is moved by vibrating membranes)
- Scalability
- Less noise
- Dust-free computer insides
- Low power consumption
All of these seem like great advantages in my book. The only real problem it has is I am assuming it at least for now has a higher cost than the normal fans. Simply thanks to the scale of manufacturing. But if this becomes a successful product the price of it is sure to drop as well. But even with a higher price, I can see this as having great potential for specific cases.
What does this mean for mining
Initially, the company is targeting the laptop market, naturally. As space and efficiency, there come at a premium. But they are eying GPUs for future implementation as well. This is thanks to the scalability of simply adding more chips. This would allow for a much smaller GPU and a much cooler one as well. Meaning overclocking should be way less of an issue than it is today. And with the air exiting at such a high speed it should also help with the air circulation surrounding the mining rig.
They are not big, but it sure packs a punch
But perhaps the biggest quality of life improvement a miner potentially can get is the reduction in noise. Just imagine not having to listen to those ASIC fans. The numbers I have seen are only a comparison between the chip and a similar fan. But according to them, the chip cuts that notice in half, 21 dBA compared to 42 dBA. And even if cutting the decibels in half is not achieved, I think cutting them to 2/3 definitely should be achievable.
But these chips also have another benefit up their sleeve. And this is thanks to their high volume and airspeeds. You are able to fit a dust filter on a laptop. Meaning no more late-night dust sessions. I see no reason why that should not be a possibility for both ASICs and Mining cases. An open-air rig would still have dust issues, not much this chip will do to elevate that. But an ASIC or a Mining case should definitely be able to be constructed to take advantage of this, providing if not a dust-free environment at least a dust less? less dusty one. And of course, this means less maintenance and more uptime. And of course, there is the benefit of lower power consumption. This can scale from negligible to very substantial depending on your mining farm's size.
