First Football Player Transfer Fully Paid in Bitcoin

Historical transfer for European football and Bitcoin.

  • David Barral joined the DUX Internacional de Madrid club and became the first football player ever transferred using only cryptocurrency. The transfer was paid in Bitcoin and facilitated by the company CRIPTAN.es.

  • Coming from the Racing de Santander, David Barral previously played for Levante, Gijon and the Real Madrid reserve team among others and before ending in DUX Internacional de Madrid, a 3rd division club in Segunda B.
  • Criptan, a new sponsor of the club DUX Internacional de Madrid, manages and facilitates payments in cryptocurrencies, notably Bitcoin.
  • Almost exactly 2 years ago however, a Turkish player was transferred with funds partially paid in Bitcoin and could actually claim to be the first football transfer transaction paid, in part, using Bitcoin.

  • For several reasons, including security, speed and low fees, cryptocurrencies are definitely a new avenue for payments. While this transfer was a transfer between two Spanish clubs, it's not hard to imagine that cryptocurrencies could greatly facilitate and speed up international transfers from countries using two different national currencies.

History has been made this Friday.
