eToro, an investment platform for trading stocks and cryptocurrencies as a social investment network, has created its own crypto-based Universal Basic Income called GoodDollar. This UBI experiment, unlike Circles, allows you to sign up using a Gmail account, Facebook account, or your cell phone number to start earning free crypto as your UBI. While eToro is a private enterprise, GoodDollar itself is a non-profit project designed to see how viable crypto-based UBI can be.
"The fundamental principle of universal basic income is providing an unconditional, regularly recurring cash payment on an individual basis, regardless of a person’s employment status or social standing”. says Yoni Assia, CEO of eToro.
The project was given $1 million US Dollars in kickstarter funding and is continuing its trial phase which began in September of this year. The UBI pays you in GoodDollar (G$) cryptocurrency in increments you can claim at least every 24 hours. Anyone with a cellphone can claim the currency and when you have enough of it, you can convert it to a local currency or trade it in a small online marketplace for digital items.
