Dygycon - curing nft loneliness since 2020

If you're reading this, chances are you're wrapped up in the world of non-fungible tokens.

Some of us have been swept away by things like guaranteed blockchain-backed security of ownership, ease of trading, and endless possibilities for collectible assets. Some of us have even shifted to the point of struggling to see value in physical collectibles, when just a few years ago the idea that non-physical items could have collectible value was merely a dream. This industry is moving fast, and now NFTs are beginning to gain worldwide traction.

But there's still something missing. In the post covid world, it's something that is needed more than ever. The fact that so many of us are becoming satisfied with digital collectibles instead of physical may come with heaps of profit for future thinkers and smart investors, but it also comes with a price that is deeper than money. I'm talking about the human connection.

Sure, we know people in the space. We have met people who share our interests on social media and perhaps even collaborated with them on some level. The most fortunate of us have made good friends through our interest in NFTs, but even those friends may live states away or across an ocean.

The difference between collecting physical items when we were younger and collecting NFTs today can be boiled down to one important idea: Personal connections with other humans. While automated markets that allow you to transact and trade hundreds of times each day are absolutely amazing, no matter how convenient, they can be no substitute for going to the comic book store for Friday Night Magic or spending some time haggling with the dealer of sports cards at the flea market. No matter how much joy I find in collecting these non-physical assets and how much value I see in them, they cannot rise to the expectations of my memories of trading pogs and cards with my after-school friends while I waited for my mom to get off work for the day and pick me up.

Many of these things may be (sadly) bygone remnants of the past, and our children may not be able to enjoy them as we did. Still, we can rest assured that they will find joy in different places, by making a new kinds of personal connections with others.

The Splinterlands team has created DYGYCON with personal connections foremost in our minds and hearts. We are a team that is located all over the world. We work remotely, and many of us have little hope of ever meeting our co-workers in person. This may not affect our abilities to do valuable and productive work together on a project, but we still need each other.

DYGYCON is a digital place not only to network with people in your line of work or to promote your brand to the right kind of potential clients, but to hang out casually and chat with friends. The Expo experience powered by Gamerjibe has been created and polished so that after a few minutes in the event, you may forget that you're chatting with people halfway around the world whose faces you'll never see in person. Reaching this point of tricking your own subconscious is crucial to overcoming loneliness, especially for people who tend to think that they have everything they need on the machine in front of them.

In our three hour event, you can stand around the fire roasting marshmallows and exchange stories of crypto successes and failures with new friends. You can relax by the pond with your line in the water, and while waiting to see who catches the bigger fish, you may form a partnership or friendship with the person next to you without even realizing that it's happening. You can spend some time in the Auction House with a real-life auctioneer and perhaps snag a great deal on an exclusive collectible from one of our partners. You can hear from leading industry experts about some of the most innovative projects in crypto, then speak directly to them afterwards as if you're right there with them.

We want to attend physical conventions as badly as you do. We long for the return of the days in which we can gather in a crowded and stinky expo hall full of cosplaying fans, company reps and flyer shills. We dream of the things we used to hate, like waiting in line, being rushed through the box office window and the annoying feeling of an attendance bracelet on your wrist, even while you sleep at night between the days of the convention. We are hopeful for the return of these things, at which point we will no longer take them for granted, but we are also not willing to wait. That is why we have created DYGYCON.
