Cryptocurrencies, like last year, are among the topics to be discussed in Davos this year.

The World Economic Forum annual meeting, which will be held online this year due to the pandemic, will be a digital currency-themed panel tomorrow on the first day of 2021. At the panel, Bank of England President Andrew Bailey and Western Union CEO Hikmet Ersek will speak. Other panelists are BTC Afrika S.A. CEO Elizabeth Rossiello with North Island Ventures CEO Glenn H. Hutchins. Topics of the session include the waning role of cash and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

In a speech in September, Bailey claimed that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are unsustainable for payments, and that stable cryptocurrencies issued by private companies should be regulated on a global scale.

Crypto coins were discussed in Davos last year and were discussed in three separate panels.

Many prominent world leaders, from Chinese President Xi Jinping to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, will also attend Davos 2021.
