Build your own GPU Mining Rig : 1

Do repost and rate:

I will explain how to create a mining RIG, the role of each components and answer some basic questions.

WHAT IS A MINING RIG ?

A mining RIG is a machine that has the same hardware components as a Computer, but has the only purpose of mining cryptocurrencies.

WHAT SPARES TO USE FOR A MINING RIG ?

MOTHERBOARD

The motherboard has a predominant role in the creation of your mining RIG, since it’s one of the main components of your RIG.

When you take a motherboard for crypto-mining, it is essential to choose a motherboard with a large number of PCI-Express ports. PCI-Express ports will allow you to connect your graphics cards. The more ports of this type you have on your motherboard, the more GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) you will be able to connect.

CPU

The processor is the brain of the computer, it’s the one that will process the data received by the motherboard. Without the CPU (Central Processing Unit), the different components could not communicate with each other and it would be impossible to use your RIG.

However, you do not need a powerful processor to run your RIG. An entry-level CPU, or even a maximum of mid-range, will do the job.

GPU

The graphics card is the essential component in the creation of your RIG since it is the element that will allow you to mine cryptocurrencies. Indeed, the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) will use it’s power to do work on the blockchain.

Better is the graphics card, better your mining performance will be and more cryptocurrencies will be mine. Similarly, if you have plenty of graphics cards connected to your mining RIG, you will have more cryptocurrencies. Find the list of Gpus and its speed.

RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) is used on any computer to store temporary data. With its fast reading ability, it allows a smooth use of your computer.

Like the CPU, you don’t need a large RAM memory to run your RIG. A 4 GB RAM strip is more than sufficient.

POWER SUPPLY

The power supply provides electrical power to all the components of your RIG. Without it, your machine will not turn on and therefore will not work. For the proper functioning of your mining RIG, the power supply unit must have sufficient or even higher power to supply the various components of your machine.

For example, if your mining RIG consumes 650W, you must take a power supply superior to 650W. However, it’s recommended to have more power compared to your initial consumption, do not hesitate to take a power above. You can use several power supplies to power your Rig. For example, 3000 Watts power supply unit is ideal for 19 GPU rig.

STORAGE

Storage, as its name suggests, is intended to record and store computer data. Storage allows you to contain your operating system (OS) and mining software which is useful for your mining RIG.

There are different types of storage: internal and external. Internal storage, via a hard disk or SSD is connected directly to your motherboard. On the other hand, external storage, such as a USB key (Universal Serial Bus) is a portable system that connects via an external port.

When you mine, you don’t need a lot of storage capacity. A USB key, 32 or 64 GB, can easily do the job. Anyhow 120GB SSD is ideal for mining.

OTHER STUFF

To optimize your mining RIG, you may need some accessories like PCI-Express risers and power supply splitters.

PCI-EXPRESS RISERS

Having a lot of graphics cards is good, but you won’t be able to put all of them on your motherboard. You will have to buy some risers PCI-Express ! This tiny accessory will allow you to connect your GPUs outside your motherboard.

POWER SUPPLY SPLITTER

All your graphic cards of your mining RIG will have to be powered. It may happen that the power supply does not have the necessary number of slots to connect your GPUs. The power supply splitter will be useful in this case.

HOW TO MINE WITH MY MINING RIG ?

Once you have created and built your mining RIG, you will need to setup it.

I will send mining software installation in next newsletter. You need Computer Monitor and Keyboard at initial time only. Just write few lines of code for automated mining. In case of unexpected reboot, the rig will initialise mining again.

I will cover this too in next issue.
