Blockchain founded digital passports comprising a traveler’s COVID-19 testing & vaccination status will instigate pilots in the subsequent month. The International Air Transport Association will soon reel out blockchain built passports that numerically store an individual’s health information — precisely, their COVID-19 testing & vaccination status.
In a change which IATA speaks can reopen international & untie present global quarantine limitations, a “health” passport will be kept in a user’s smartphone in the procedure of an app, with the first real-world testing predictable to take place as soon as Feb.
Identified as the IATA Travel Pass & labeled as a method to give travelers a complete switch over their data, the app would allegedly also act as a 2-way communication device that broadcasts information to pertinent governments, vaccination centers, & airlines.

‘This is the beauty of the technology we are through; it places the passenger in complete control of their data. There is no central database & nobody can hack it. The passenger possesses their data & they share it with the airline. It is so powerful & it is perhaps one of the first-ever instances of blockchain technology being applied in a way that benefits people’
The Travel Pass will feature 4 chief communicating components: the digital passport module; a Lab app, which lets data be sent firmly through testing labs & the app itself; a global registry of vaccination centers, & a global registry of up-to-date health supplies demanded by international travelers at any given time.
If they would be passenger’s health & vaccination status encounters international supplies, then, Hayden supposed, the passenger would be good to go.
‘So, now passengers have 3 important things on their phone — their digital passports, test results & what we call an ‘okay to travel’. Passengers can then select whether to share this data on the airline app. They will be encouraged to submit their data & if they click on submit it will be led to the airline. This is humble from a passenger perspective — factually with the click of a couple of buttons the airline now has all passenger’s particulars, & they’re 100% sure that the passenger is okay to fly’
Passengers flying out of Abu Dhabi through Etihad airlines will be the first to be obtainable the usage of digital passports in Q1 2021.
