Bitcoin Breaks $12,400 for First Time Since 10 July 2019, Now Up 72% in 2020

At 16:00 UTC (or 12:00 Eastern Time) on Monday (August 17), Bitcoin reached an intraday high of $12,471.

According to data from CryptoCompare, the Bitcoin price broke through the $12,400 level at 15:45 UTC, and within 15 minutes, BTC had reached $12,471.

This was the first time Bitcoin had been above the $12,400 level in over 13 months:

At the time of writing (i.e. as of 18:22 UTC on August 17), Bitcoin is trading around $12,376, which means that it is up 4.59% vs USD in the past 24-hour period and up 72.3% vs USD for the year-to-date period.

According to data from Blockchain.com, Bitcoin’s seven-day average hash rate reached a new all-time high on Sunday (August 16): 129.075 EH/s.

Earlier today, famous gold bug Peter Schiff commented about Berkshire Hathaway’s purchase (in Q2 2020) of some shares of Barrick Gold (NYSE: GOLD), the world’s largest gold miner.

A few minutes ago, Dave Portnoy, the founder and president of Barstool Sports, who bought $200,000 worth of Bitcoin last Wednesday (August 13) with the help of the Winklevoss twins, tweeted that Warren Buffett should be getting into Bitcoin and not gold:
