We've seen sideways movement from both bitcoin and ether in the past few days. What I've also seen is a great deal of upward movement in my smaller altcoin portfolio. This actually happened last week as well.
However, last week I missed out on some of the gains I could have had before bitcoin took its little mini rally up to $19.6k and ether briefly hit $620. Here's what I'm doing to ensure that I don't miss out on the gains of these microcycles.
- Take the little gains. It might be tempting to wait on a 2X or 3X before you sell out of a coin. This is a really good way to miss out on the 20% and 30% gains that you could be taking in the meantime. In a market like this, your goal should be more coins. I describe the phenomenon of this market here in my coin jumping strategy article. Bottom line – when I coin jump, I end up happy. When I don't, I end up pissed off and in the red.
- Tether out a percentage. Don't worry about leaving a little bit of money on the table if you don't exactly tether at the top of a short minirun. As long as you don't completely sell out of any position, you will benefit when the entire market moves up.
- Pay back your loans. If you are using a lend/borrow protocol like me, pay back your loans little by little. Even a few hundred dollars will make a huge difference, and you also get protection against a flash crash liquidation.
- Splash your gains onto smaller, more speculative projects. If you get a 30% move on one of your coins while the market only moves 3%, take that extra 27% and expand into one of those new projects you've been looking at. It's a free entry. Take it.
If you're sitting in front of the computer all day like me staring at crypto charts, there is no reason to miss these little cycles of profit. People say that you can't time the market – they couldn't be more wrong. Maybe they can't time the market.
The secret is to react instead of thinking you have to predict. If you're motivated to watch crypto all day, just react. Take profits when they come, and tether when you see rollover. Use the mini cycles that occur between altcoins and BTC / ETH to your advantage.
