Bitcoin was not invented overnight, it is the fruit of many years of work. I will quickly retrace its history to understand where it has its roots, what were the motivations behind its creation and have a clearer vision about it.

First of all, it is important to point out that before the 1970s, cryptography was only used by the military and intelligence agencies. It was an area that most people had little or no knowledge of. Then over the years, cryptography gradually fell into the public domain, with the release of several works on the subject, allowing to initiate a certain democratization.

But what is cryptography? According to Wikipedia, this is a set of processes aimed at encrypting information to ensure confidentiality between the sender and the recipient.

In 1992, a small group of individuals passionate about cryptography began to form in San Francisco. It is with humor that the group self-baptizes the cypherpunks, which is a play on words between Cypher (encryption) and Cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction. For example, the Matrix trilogy is part of the Cyberpunk subgenre.

This small group of individuals will very quickly mutate into a global mailing list of more than 700 members. The topics of discussion then no longer revolve solely around cryptography but also around mathematics, politics, philosophy and computer science.

But before we go any further, let's ask ourselves what is anarchism? It is a philosophy according to which we want a society to be organized in self-management, without hierarchy and without State. Anarchism is to be opposed to fascism. Anarchists want a world where there are no rules and everyone is free to do what they want, while fascists prefer a world where everything is under control with a strict hierarchy and a state.

Now that we have defined the term anarchist, we can turn to the term crypto-anarchist. We can consider this as the geek and nerd side of anarchists, they have the same thought and the same ideology as their big brother but they apply it in areas related to new technologies, the Internet, new communications networks... To put it simply, they seek to protect information and privacy on communication networks, using cryptography.

Crypto-anarchists want to control their privacy as much as possible and for this they use encryption to the limit. But why ? Are they trying to hide things? Not really, they adopt this strategy as a precaution. They tell themselves that it is not because they have nothing to hide that they have to agree to have a surveillance camera at home that films them 24/7.

They also hate centralization and prefer to use peer-to-peer networks and all sorts of things that don't go through a central server. And when you take a closer look, you realize that the money rests on a centralized system. If you want to send money (make a transfer) to someone, this money will always pass through the hands of banks which will perform different validation processes. And it is precisely this point that bristles the hairs of crypto-anarchists ??

Today, we are able to say that crypto-anarchists are behind the creation of Bitcoin and Blockchain. Indeed, Bitcoin's white paper makes reference to many works written by crypto-anarchists.
