?? Ethereum Reaches New All-Time High, Bitcoin Breaks Above $38,000
At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $1,718, up 5% on the day. The coin's market capitalization—the combined price of all ETH in circulation—amounts to roughly $195.9 billion, with a daily trading volume of over $40 billion.
Ethereum has been on a strong uptrend over the past few weeks, rising from $640 to its current price in just two months and eclipsing its previous all-time high at the start of January.
Bitcoin, on the other hand, didn't break any records today, but its price has broken above $38,000, potentially priming the crypto to take another jab at its ATH of $41,940 on January 8. Currently, BTC is trading at $38,091 per coin.

Investors look to be temporarily shifting focus away from bitcoin and toward crypto tokens associated with decentralized finance (DeFi).
In the past 24 hours, DeFi-linked coins such as COMP, AAVE, KNC and ZRX have all leapt to fresh lifetime highs.
Compound’s governance token COMP clocked a new record of $500, taking the month-to-date gain to above 40%. The token jumped 130% last month and has risen by 20% in the past 24 hours, according to data provider CryptoCompare.
?? Central Bank of Nigeria bans banks from servicing crypto exchanges
The Central Bank of Nigeria has placed a ban on all regulated financial institutions from providing services to crypto exchanges in the country.
The prohibition was contained in a circular issued by the CBN on Friday. According to the central bank's notice, the ruling is an extension of earlier warnings from the bank about the risks associated with digital currencies.
As part of the ban, the CBN has directed all commercial banks to close accounts belonging to crypto exchanges and other businesses transacting in cryptocurrencies in the country.
The CBN also warned of stiff penalties to any bank or financial institution that fails to comply with the directive.
Nigeria's central bank did not respond immediately to Cointelegraph's request for comments on the issue. However, in a previous piece of correspondence, Osita Nwanisobi, acting director of the CBN's communications department, told Cointelegraph that commercial banks had previously been warned not to participate in the crypto market.
?? PayPal Says Venmo Under Investigation in US by Consumer Regulator
Fintech giant PayPal (PYPL) said Friday its Venmo app is being investigated by a U.S. consumer watchdog.
- The company has received a civil investigative demand (CID) from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over alleged “unauthorized fund transfers and collections processes” by Venmo, reports Reuters on Friday.
- A CID is a legal request for records and documents or other information related to an agency investigation.
- Venmo provides a mobile-based peer-to-peer payments platform with social features.
- PayPal said last June it would allow users to buy, hold and sell cryptocurrencies on Venmo later this year.
