Battle for NFT Domination: Bored Apes vs CryptoPunks – Top 10 NFT Sales

Amidst all the noise coming from NFT drops and hype, the only ones that consistently perform well are the Bored Apes and CryptoPunks. Bored Ape #8585 sold for $2.68 million last week, making it the biggest on-chain NFT sale. Furthermore, half of the entries in this week’s top 10 came from the CryptoPunks NFT collection, signifying a relentless demand to own one of the pioneering NFTs on the market.

With the $2.68 million purchase the Bored Apes took over the number 1 spot of the charts, followed by Dankrupt, an artwork from XCOPY. However, CryptoPunks managed to get into the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spot of the charts. Once again, CryptoPunks are premium priced NFTs for the most avid collectors on the market.

Last week we saw Jordan “The Wolf of Wall Street” Belfort acquiring a punk. This purchase didn’t make the top 10, but signals the demand for CryptoPunks. Celebrities want in on arguably the number 1 collection on the market. However, Bored Ape Yacht Club has positioned itself as the go-to social club for the NFT elite. Its grass root origins and ever growing footprint make it an attractive investment for those who can spend the money.

Despite the ongoing battle for dominance between the two NFT collections, some collectors can’t be bothered to pick a side. This wallet acquired both CryptoPunk #7331 and Bored Ape #820 last week, spending roughly $1.8 million in the process. Their NFT portfolio now contains more than $5.87 million worth of NFTs. This collection includes 18 Bored Apes, 2 Punks, some Art Blocks, Anonymice, Cool Cats, CrypToadz, and Visitors of Imma Degen.

NFT collections compared

CryptoPunks launched in 2017, and many consider it to be the first NFT collection. The collection has had $1.52 billion in trading volume, making it second to Axie Infinity with $2.7 billion. However, CryptoPunks only needed 18.833 sold NFTs for that. That’s a lifetime average of $80.709 per transacted NFT. Furthermore, the most expensive CryptoPunk sold for more than $7.5 million

The Bored Ape Yacht Club launched earlier this year, and has seen $589 million in NFT trading volume. With 21.751 sold NFTs, that gives the average Bored Ape a $27.079 price tag over its lifetime. The most expensive Bored Ape NFT so far, sold for $2.91 million.

In terms of legacy, top purchases, and average pricing we can still consider CryptoPunks to stronger NFT collection. However, Bored Apes have become a strong brand in the NFT space, and this could very well push the NFT collection to new heights.
