Established electronic music producer Aphex Twin has sold a piece of NFT artwork for 72 ETH or over just over $127,000 at the time of writing on the Foundation NFT marketplace. The digital collectible sold in an online auction beginning with a starting price of 1 ETH, or about $1,800.
Called “/Afx/weirdcore,” the audiovisual NFT piece appears to be an animated version of the artist’s face, accompanied by music composed by Aphex Twin. The piece alludes to the cover of Aphex Twin’s I Care Because You Do album released in 1995.
Richard D.James, commonly known as Aphex Twin, said on Twitter that the project will donate some of the raised funds to environmental initiatives and charity, stating, “We will spend a portion of the money on planting trees and either donating to permaculture projects or setting them up ourselves, depending on how much we get.”
For those that know of Aphex Twin and his music and quite an odd lifestyle then the above promise to plant trees or help the environment with the proceeds should not come as a surprise. Aphex Twin has long been a renowned social activist, visual artist, and cutting edge producer with a very solid and wide-reaching worldwide fan-base. Interestingly, the figure for the sale whilst impressive for a debut is shaded by other, much larger digital collectible sales.
Who bought it?
Looking at the new owners’ wallet address using the Dappradar Portfolio tracker we can see that the buyer is a collector of NFT artworks, especially through the Foundation marketplace.
Digital Collectibles Booming
The NFT industry has been booming recently, attracting more and more musicians and artists to benefit from new ways to sell digital artwork online. Rapper Soulja Boy dropped NFT art on Rarible. Also, DJs like Deadmau5, 3LAU, and Carl Cox have collaborated on one or more digital artworks.
More recently four NFT sales for lifetime front row seats at every Kings of Leon concert around the world have been auctioned for a total of 241.51 ETH or $441,963. Also, the rock band sold digital artworks as NFTs, adding another $414,831 to their NFT earnings.
In January the biggest NFT marketplaces generated a total of $71 million. One month later that number quadrupled to more than $342 million. Top sales include collections like CryptoPunks, Autoglyph, Hashmasks, and art by Beeple. While Sorare, Rarible, and Art Blocks also join that list when it comes down to the total volume.
