Speaking to IGN about the 10th anniversary of Respawn Entertainment, co-founder Vince Zampella revealed that there are no new Titanfall games in development.
Zampella said that the shooter series is “always there” and that he would “personally like to see some kind of resurrection there,” but there is nothing currently being developed
This is a U-turn away from what Zampella said just last year. In February 2019, Zampella tweeted that Respawn was developing some sort of Titanfall game for release later in the year.
Respawn Had Been Developing a “Premium” Game
EA CEO Andrew Wilson also said that this new game would be a “premium” title that is a “twist” on the Titanfall series. Whatever they were developing has seemingly been canceled.
Respawn is highly successful as a developer. Its free-to-play multiplayer title Apex Legends brings in millions of dollars each month. The developer also seems to be making Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2, a new single-player title, after the success of the first back in November 2019.
Titanfall 2’s Poor Sales Didn’t Meet Expectations
However, the Titanfall series appears to be on shaky ground after the disastrous launch of Titanfall 2 (2016). EA scheduled its release between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Battlefield and Call of Duty are much more popular and Titanfall 2 did not hit sales expectations.
A mobile game called Titanfall: Assault was released in 2017 but its servers were shut down less than a year later. Fans were frustrated that this wasn’t a new, big entry in the series but it’s not known how much money the mobile title made.
It’s now unclear what the plans are for the Titanfall series. What looked to be one of EA’s most promising series now seems to be on the shelf indefinitely.
