2021 Tesla Model Y Seeing Minor Interior Design Changes

The Tesla Model Y has seen a fresh update to its interior design as per a new revelation out of China. The updated Model Y has been spotted on the Chinese version of the Tesla configurator. This comes as Tesla Model Y units are currently stacked outside Gigafactory Shanghai with the rollout expected to begin later this month.

As is the case with most interior design upgrades, these changes should also inevitably make their way to the American Tesla configurator section. However, there’s no specific timeline on when that will be. The changes are subtle, but somewhat significant, especially compared to the current-gen Model Y.

For starters, this crossover EV will now feature a revamped center console in line with the 2021 Model 3 upgrade. This console will also consist of a wireless phone charger, which is a welcome upgrade.

A change with the Model Y that we haven’t seen on the recent Model 3 refresh is the inclusion of a new wooden panel on the doors, something that could help differentiate the Model Y from the Model 3 and the rest of Tesla’s lineup of vehicles.

Tesla is aiming big in the highly competitive Chinese EV industry which has manufacturers like Xpeng (sometimes referred to as a Tesla clone) and Nio among others.

Tesla announced earlier today that the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor variant will cost 339,900 CNY ($52,000) while the Model Y Performance model will start at 369,900 CNY ($56,600) in the region. This is a fairly attractive price tag considering the Chinese EV industry.

Although the Model Y has seen some quality-related issues in the U.S., there’s no denying that it has been among the best selling EVs in the segment in 2020. It will be interesting to see if Tesla can maintain its positive run this year given that we’re expected to see the arrival of a bunch of new EVs, including the Rivian R1T and Lucid Air.

What do you make of the interior changes with the Model Y?
